What is Steffen / Steffes heating / ETS?

The Steffes system (often spelled “Steffen” or “Steffes”) refers to Electric Thermal Storage (ETS) heating. In an ETS system, electricity is used (often during off-peak hours) to heat a dense thermal mass (e.g. ceramic bricks), which then stores and releases heat over time.

How does the ETS / Steffes system work?

During low-cost or off-peak electricity periods, the system charges (heats) the thermal mass.

As the ambient temperature drops, the stored heat is gradually released into your home to maintain comfort.

Because the heat is “pre-stored,” it can deliver performance during peak times while using cheaper off-peak power.

What are the advantages of using an ETS / Steffes system?

Potential energy cost savings by leveraging off-peak electricity rates.

Minimal maintenance (no burners, no oil, no combustion byproducts).

Cleaner and safer: no CO (carbon monoxide) emissions from combustion, no fuel storage required.

Predictable, consistent heating (less fluctuation).

What kind of maintenance does a Steffes / ETS system need

Very minimal. Because there are no combustion parts, fuel, or soot, routine maintenance and cleanings are reduced.
